and I had six surgeries on them last spring so I think my total is around 10, mostly escapist trash.
I find it much easier to read on a 20 inch monitor than on a page. Plus, you can't do ctrl+scroll on a page.

I commute on public transit and am a very fast reader.
Mostly lighter fare ... and definitely paperback!

with 3 more current. I read constantly but I don't like to rush through (I can't imagine reading 70 in 3 months). Plus I read a lot of magazines (The Nation, Mother Jones, Free Inquiry, etc.) which take up a lot of my reading time. Since I started counting in 2001, the most books I've read in one year is 44; the least, 24. However, I have over 600 fiction books on my shelf waiting to be read, and hundreds more of non-fiction. Obviously, I buy 'em a lot quicker than I read 'em lol (I've bought about 36 so far this year)!

How much time do you spend reading a day? Do you skim or read every word? I've always been somewhat puzzled by how some people can just knock out book after book...it seems to take me forever, but that could just be a product of limited time.

I can scan even more quickly, but I generally only scan non-fiction, looking for specific information.
I also don't watch much tv. I spend way more time reading.

depending on the book, if the author has spent waaaaaaaaaay too much time on some bullshit then I usually skim through some pages. Sometimes that bites me in the ass...because I might have missed something minute but important..then I have to go back and figure out what exactly I missed....should have just read the pages...:banghead:

Because I'm bipolar I go through stages where I really get into things and then stages where I don't have any interest at all. So I'll go months without reading a book and then I'll read a dozen in one month. I do the same with movies. I watched 37 movies from mid-January to mid-February and only 2 since.
Having the internet also cuts way into my book reading time. Before the internet there wasn't much to do, so I read and did a lot of artwork. I hardly do either now because I spend half my time reading stuff online. I read more than ever, just not books.
My record for books in a year is 126 (back in '99). My father does nothing but read, day after day, and his record is 248 in a year, and from what he says he's on a pace to match that this year. At the rate you're going you won't be far off either.

20. 2-3 per week, at least 50 for the year... |
|
On SS, so I use the library for books. Used to buy them, but who could afford 2-3 books (prefer hardcover) a week? If a book is 400+ pages, it might take me 4 days, but a 200-page book I can finish in a day and a half. I read 99% mystery/detective....
Bad knee keeps me from going to the library - can't kneel and can't easily get on the stool, so I use the library's great computer feature...
What I do is look up books or authors on the computer at home, and mark a box saying, "Request." One can request as many as 40, but I usually get about 12. The librarian gets the books off the shelves and sends an email that the books are ready to pick up...they also use an automated phone call to tell me that the books are ready to pick up.
I can place requests for new books that haven't come out yet and am sometimes the first to get the book when it comes in, but sometimes have to wait a months till my turn.

An average of 3-4 books a week is a conservative estimate. We're about half way through the year. So perhaps a hundred or so.

43. Not really sure, I guess. |
|
The first half of the year, I didn't read as many as I have this last half of the year. I was only reading at bedtime and it would take me a quite a while to get through a book because it did what it was supposed to do--help me get to sleep. I would also read if I woke up in the middle of the night to get back to sleep.
This last half of the year, I've been averaging about 2-3 per week. I love using the library so I have to make sure I request them in enough time so they arrive about when I'm finishing the last one from the previous batch.
I can't imagine anything more relaxing and enjoyable. And my housework is showing it!

needless to say i don't watch tv and i spend a lot of time in airports/on planes (i don't generally use the inflight entertainment) -- i also like to cool down at night after hubby has nodded off by spending an hour reading a book until i get sleepy -- the entertainments that put men to sleep energize women, if you know what i mean
needless to say, not all of these books are deep reads, some of them are airplane books (cheap suspense/thrillers that i pick up for pennies at the used book store) or gambling/poker books but i like to think i've read a few worthy titles this year :-)
before the internet i read a book every day AND sometimes several magazines as well, but i no longer read magazines, they have been completely replaced by the world wide web
i do not skim but i do read quickly, i think the speed at which i read is what makes it easy for me to visualize scenes, when i think of a book, i don't think so much of words, i think of certain scenes and images -- i remember reading an essay by asimov once where he suggested that people who read slowly simply can't put the images together quickly enough to enjoy reading or to "see" the action, and i'm guessing this is correct
i guess it's obv. i type quickly and i read much more quickly than i can type!
