Fascinating. Against all the odds, he did magic - and the talent that swarmed him in Detroit when he was just starting out, well, just reading the names almost makes me cry.

6. Still reading "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" (second time) and

just finished a Peter Robinson and George RR Martin. Contemplating what next, but it will probably have to wait until I finish writing lectures for the new term.

7. "The Once and Future King"

by T.H. White. This is a playful, fun, sad and interesting take on "Mort d'Artur."

21. I first read that book in 10th grade, back in the 70s.

Here's a funny story:

When I was half-way through my sophmore year, my mom sent me back to the midwest to live with the father I'd rarely met, and hadn't seen or heard from in a decade. She couldn't handle my admittedly rough adolescence. I spent on semester at the high school there, and read "The Once and Future King" there. I wrote an extensive essay response, which got an "A." As usual.

I came back home that summer, and went back to the local high school, 2,000 miles away, that fall. I was taking a world lit and and english lit class; same teacher for both. I don't remember which class came first, but...I was used to cruising. My essays always got top grades. Except that my first for her got a "C," and the second got a "B-." The 3rd got a "B+." I was frustrated beyond belief.

So I recopied my essay from the previous year, from a high school 2000 miles away, and turned it in. I figured I'd nail her; my other high school teacher gave it an "A," and she wouldn't. She obviously had it in for me.

So I got the paper back, and it got..... an "A."

:blush: I guess it wasn't her. I guess I'd gotten lazy.

Anyway, I still have the same copy, 40 years later, and I still read it every few years.

8. I started Trespass by Valerie Martin last night

and am about a third of the way through it. Only 280 some pages so I should finish it soon, probably by tomorrow with all the work I have to accomplish today.

Looking forward to receiving Every Patient Tells a Story : Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis by Lisa Sanders from the library in a few days and after that, Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens : Frank Oppenheimer and the World He Made Up by K.C. Cole. Both are non-fiction but piqued my interest during NPR interviews. I hear the latter is an interesting subject but the book is rather dull. We'll see.

I've also had Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery recommended to me by a friend, so that is likely to be up after that.

Then it really is on to conquer the full series of Avalon books. I feel the need of more fantasy these days to avert my attention from the stupidity of, and my frustrations with, the the healthcare arguments. :eyes:

I really do read to escape. Period. But enjoy the process of learning new things as I do.

13. "A Simple Plan" by Scott Smith

I read "The Ruins" a couple of months ago after I found it in a bookstore. I had seen the movie last year and thought it was pretty good.

Really enjoyed the book, got it from the library and read it straight through on a Sunday (doesn't have "chapters" if IIRC)
Need to look into A Simple Plan (book/movie) too

18. They're all pretty good, IMO

I went in cold so I didn't know what's going on, and was geniunly surprised by the "twist" in "The Ruins" when I saw the movie. Pretty good "creep" factor once you realize what they're fighting against.

Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis by Lisa Sanders, M.D.

Non-fiction but no one asks this question over there. Excellent read so far and I would think this would be a must as a gift for the graduating or beginning or anywhere in between med student. Truly fascinating.

17. Just finished Clouds of Witness, by Ms.Sayers

Reading Witches Abroad, by Terry Pratchett. I'm sure I'll get to the end of him someday. Next in the que is The City and the City, by China Mieville. It's been well reviewed over at Amazon, but I know nothing about it. Anyone resd it?

20. Finished Every Patient Tells a Story and picking

up two new books from the library tomorrow morning:

Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery and Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens:Frank Oppenheimer and the World He Made Up by K.C. Kole

Tonight it's back into the collection of Hemingway, short stories and exerpts when I go to bed. It's what I thumb through when I have nothing else.

I can't get the series in order, putting them on hold from the library, but I've read 4 of the first 6, 2 of them this week.
