4. Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xiaolong |

Edited on Sun Sep-06-09 01:14 PM by Thirtieschild
Written in his second language, slow going at first (took me a week to read it instead of my usual couple of days), some cliches (which is likely the result of writing in his second language), lots of Chinese poetry and references to legends. I kept with it because I was fascinated by the glimpse into Chinese life in the late 1980s, early 1990s. I was rewarded with a story that I will always remember. The end shocks and makes you think.

I think the sections about Marconi are a little dry but I'm interested in seeing how the two story lines come together.
I liked Erik Larson's Devil in the White City better at this point.

16. I thought I posted here? What happened? Was I disqualified? |
|
Oh, wait, I guess I should be. Well, Cymbeline, that was this week. Which is fiction. But mostly I read non-fiction, so I guess that should not qualify for the category, but, Riding Man, by Mark Gardiner, about his motorcycle racing at the Isle of Man TT races. And I have the companion DVD, One Man's Island. dc

24. Ride With Me, Mariah Montana by Ivan Doig. |
|
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 07:53 PM by hippywife
About 40 some pages in and not as good as the first two in the trilogy...yet. It's set in more current times which is something of a disappointment. Seems he skipped some of what he could have told between the 1930's and the 1980's.
We'll see.
The other two were truly excellent, tho.
