. . . Battleground By W. E. B. Griffin"Griffin's detailed saga of the Marines in WW II (Counterattack, 1989) continues, taking his cast of characters from action on Midway to the landing at Guadalcanal. It is the summer of 1942. The Japanese expansion is at its peak"

1. Griffin is an interesting novelist. He's way to the right, politically, |
|
but his military sense is very, very good. I've enjoyed a number of his novels.

2. I have read most everything he wrote. He is very accurate historically |
|
and despite thin characters, he can tell a good story. I have not been bored by any of his books, and he must write 10 hours a day, every day.
I hope he continues for some time - there are 2 series I really want to continue for a few more episodes.

He has a habit of making inexplicable jumps in his timelines, or ending series abruptly and leaving readers hanging. He did it with more than one series. If you want specifics let me know.

5. "ending series abruptly and leaving readers hanging" - yeaaaaaaah |
|
. . .
It's one of them, sadly.
But I'll still read them to glean out the history in them; I'm afraid just "straight" history without some entertainment value in the book would not hold my interest - lazy brain I guess?
But yeah, it did end abruptly - I'll watch for sequels though, but I won't go crazy looking for them - maybe stumble across it in a year or so.
My reading has no pattern really - I just "mix it up" as I walk down the aisles.

but I find his books "War porn".
I've been there, and his books, like so many, are what I call "big picture" books. They show war as a sort of board game - like chess.
His characters are brave, and therefore unrealistic.
There is blood, but very little bowel contents or whimpering guys who don't want to die, or flies in the eyes of the dead, or chopper decks awash with blood.
Sorry... I just can't read this stuff.
Maybe "The Short Timers" by Gustav Hasford. Or "Generation Kill"... the book, not the HBO series, although HBO did a good job.
