“Locksley Hall” by Tennyson. I like the poem a lot; I like the rhythm and the story. |
|
But the older I get, the more the narrator comes across as whiny. This morning, listening to a tape of the poem, I thought he seems so self-pitying….must be an addict….
P.S. In a collection of Tennyson’s poems, my grandmother marked the following quote from “Locksley Hall” with a pencil:
“As the husband is, the wife is: thou art mated with a clown, And the grossness of his nature will have weight to drag thee down.”
I have a sneaking suspicion my grandparents' marriage wasn’t all that great.
