5. "The coming of Conan the Cimmerian" |
|
A collection of Robert E. Howards' own Conan stories, rather than the pastiches others are familiar with.
'Cause sometimes, you just want to read about steely thews, nubiles in scanty silks, and depraved demons from beyond the end of time.

9. Human Smoke. by Nicholson Baker. |
|
A history of events leading up, and during, WW2, as told via snippets from newspapers, personal diaries, memoirs, etc.
The reader gets a look at what people, famous and not famous, were doing and saying during events and various dates from 1920's thru the war. Fascinating detail which is often not found in the "typical" history book. Churchill does not come off well.

Kept me up late, which is typical of the Reacher books. He is one of my favorite series characters in fiction. I mean, how can you not like a guy who travels with nothing more than a toothbrush, if even that, and buys new clothes when he needs a change. What a guy. The only mystery seems to be how he gets his money. This was addressed some time back, but you'll notice that he never uses an ATM card or accesses wire transfers. It's kind of like gunfights in the old westerns from decades ago - there seemed to be endless ammunition with no apparent effort made to get more, count shots, etc. In any case, you can't go wrong with any of the Reacher books, and this is one of the best.

and sort of remember some guy, was it a general?, leaving his estate to Reacher, who could not stay in one place, sold it and the money/pension comes every month. There was a book, can't remember which one, that told how he got his money/bank/etc. Anybody recall that book?

Thought it was good, not great. Gaiman is a cut above Terry Pratchett (who he reminds me of) but that's not saying that much. I still want to read all of Gaiman's books but so far none of them have been real keepers. I guess I enjoyed Good Omens the best.

28. THE JURY MASTER by Robert Dugoni |
|
I liked this book.
Fell in love with a character (not the main one) named police Det. Tom Molia. Funny guy. Main guy is named Atty. David Sloane. By page 77, I checked to see if the library had any more books by Dugoni and they had 2, which I've since picked up. Fingered thru to see if Molia was in either of the two and it appears that he isn't.
There's 438 pages. Some of you might enjoy this book.

37. No, haven't read any, but |
|
everytime somebody suggests a book, I look to see if it's a mystery, and especially, if it's a series book (I love series books). If there are books before the suggested book, I like to read them first...the library usually has the oldest, but sometimes you may have to borrow through inter-library to find them.

39. WRONGFUL DEATH by Robert Dugoni & almost BODILY HARM |
|
Liked his first book, THE JURY MASTER, very much. Found WRONGFUL DEATH to be without humor and was tedious. Skimmed through BODILY HARM and found 3-4 pages with my favorite character from THE JURY MASTER, Det. Tom Molia, and figured that little of him wasn't worth reading the whole book.
IMHO, author'd do better to have Molia in every book, and lots of him..
