The L.A. country/rock scene in the late 60's early 70's. Still working on Twain's autobiography and Fear & Loathing.

6. Finished A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore

Started Oreo by Fran Ross.

7. Faithful Place by Tana French

A young Irishman from a VERY dysfunctional family decides to elope to England with his girlfriend, only she never shows up and he assumes that she dumped him. Twenty-two years later, he's a Dublin cop, and evidence is found that his girlfriend was actually murdered.

Like French's previous books, this is well-written and full of vivid characters. I'm at the point where the murderer is revealed, and it's who I thought it was, but there's still a lot of book left, so I wonder what else is in store.

9. This Body of Death by Elizabeth George

I've read all of her books except for What Came Before He Shot Her.

Liking it so far. She's really good at setting a mood and describing a setting. This one is pretty creepy.

Intricate family saga/mystery set mainly in wartime England.

Wordy and LONG, but worthy for a summertime read.

15. London by Edward Rutherford

I finished Elizabeth I by Margaret George, a really great read as usual. She is my favorite current author. I started AND finished The Secret Life of Bees last weekend and loved, loved, loved it! Sucked me in from the first page, very well and melodically written.

21. I am such a slow reader, and that is a good sized book

But I just could not put it down and finished it in four days. I expected it would be the usual 3 weeks it takes me to read a book. But....I now have the lawn to mow, the house to clean, laundry to do. OMG, I feel like "the help". I enjoyed this book completely and think EVERYONE should read it.

18. Not my favorite Pendergast book...

... I only gave that one 3 stars out of 5.

It wasn't until "Ice Limit" and "Still Life with Crows" that I gave him 5 stars.

He's a great character, though!

19. Got to page 67 or so last night

and I still haven't met the great detective. One thing though, the book is scary at times but still the characters do smile and very lightly joke despite the circumsances. I love a scary book with a light touch.

The author fearlessly goes where no man goes before him - kills off 2 kids and a hound dog without mercy. Usually that's enough to make me quit and change to another book...:) :)

23. I think you'll really like Pendergast.

I had the misfortune to read "Still Life With Crows" first, and that's been my favorite one so far. (And that means that all the others have been let-downs in comparison.)

For you, though, it means something to look forward to as the series continues to get better! :)

24. Doc: A Novel by Mary Doria Russell

Great book about Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp and I don't read Western novels. It is a well told, rich, realistic and moving story of the Old West.
