Has anyone read 'Night Fall' by Nelson DeMille yet? |
|
I really enjoy reading his books and am wondering how this one is being received. Based on true events, this novel has something to do with Flight 800, the doomed airliner lost off the coast of LI, NY.

1. I read it about two weeks ago |
|
I am a huge fan of Nelson DeMille but his last few books have been yawners. Night Fall seemed to go on forever. The book puts forth the idea that Flight 800 was shot down by a missile and the government covered it up. Long, convoluted story that went nowhere slowly.
I had just finished reading The Lion's Game for the second time the weekend before 9/11 - will give you chills when you realize an American author recognized the threat of Bin Laden long before King George and his cabal got the word. If you haven't read The Charm School, Cathedral, The Talbot Odyssey, Word of Honor, The Gold Coast or The General's Daughter check those out first - or if you have read them you might want to re-read rather than spend the time on Night Fall. Like I said, huge fan, but his latest efforts do not measure up to his earlier works.

2. Thanks for your review. |

I'm also a huge fan, and have read everything DeMille has ever written. Loved the Charm School in particular. Have you read 'Up Country' (I think that's the name of his last one), about a Viet Nam vet who has to go back to VN to clean up a gov't mess? I thought that was good, too. Yes, maybe I will revisit some of these older books.

4. I read UP COUNTRY last year, and I liked it |

It's a bit long, but engrossing.
I looked over NIGHT FALL and it didn't pull me so I didn't read it.

5. My 89-year-old mother reads these damned things |

then sends them to me. I read them, but I can't honestly say I like them very much. I have a hard time caring about any of the characters, the plots seem contrived and they invariable run at least 100 pages too long. I don't mean to single out DeMille, particularly. There are any number of writers working this vein, with evident success. We seem to like the idea of the anti-hero who's embedded in the System; the rugged individualist who's working for The Man. The semi-sanctioned violence provides a "safe" catharsis. I guess it's all part of the programming. Sorry about this. I hope I haven't spoiled anybodies read.

I like his "middle period" stuff, but I read Night Fall and really liked it.
He is a very good story teller. I really liked a book he wrote about Vietnam, "Up Country", and also "Mayday".

Charm School was fantastic. I have always wondered why they have not made any movies of some of his books.
