I had dinner with Harlan Ellison! (Re-post from the Lounge). |
|
I posted this in the Lounge, but I wanted everybody here to see this 'cause I'm so thrilled.
Last weekend was Foolscap VII Fantasy Literature Convention at the Sheraton in Bellevue. Harlan Ellison was the Guest of Honor. I went up Friday night to see him speak and maybe get my book signed by him. I ended up having dinner with him, his wife and his small literary entourage. One of the highlights of my life as a reader.
He is a ferociously good speaker; Funny, pugnacious, profane, and in a strange way, very endearing. He has been the bete-noir of the speculative fiction establishment for decades, and many personal descriptions use the word "obnoxious" frequently. He can be, I suppose, but only with idiots and time-wasters. He is generous, warm and self-effacing with his fans.
If you want a thumbnail sketch of his personality, cross Marty Crane from 'Frasier' with a snapping turtle, and that will give you a good idea.
