Has anyone read E. L. Doctorow's new book "The March", yet? |
|
I'm thinking of buying it. I was wondering if anyone read it yet and their thoughts about it.
Thanks

I think it's terrific, but I'm a big Doctorow fan. Vivid characters, historical authenticity, an appreciation for the military tactics and practices of the time, and a good accounting of what a monumental event Sherman's March was. I don't know if it will replace "Ragtime" as my favorite Doctorow novel, but it's going to be close.
True Story: Years ago when I was in a high school band in Texas, we gave a concert which included the performance of a piece made up of Civil War-era songs. An older relative of mine approached me afterwards and expressed her profound outrage that, among the songs included was "Marching Thru Georgia," commerating Sherman's actions. That was more than a hundred years and at least four generations after the fact, but people's feelings were still tender about the matter; probably still are in some quarters.....
