I really like Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford books and

Dorothy Simpson's Inspector Luke Thannet books.

Can anybody recommend a similar series?

1. Colin Dexter's "Inspector Morse" series springs to mind

Although I haven't actually read them, the TV series based on them was marvellous.
