Anyone know how to identify a book?

I have a copy of "Jungle Tales of Tarzan".
It is green cloth without a dust jacket.
On the cover and spine it is embossed in brownish red of Tarzan riding on an elephant with a tree and a vine and jungle flora.
Spine has title, authors name, and Gossett and Dunlap.
It is a perfect copy--spine straight, no loose pages, no writing, rips or tears except original owner wrote name on first page in ink.
Copyright page says:
Copyright
Edgar Rice Burroughs
1919
________
Copyrighted in Great Britain

and then at the bottom of that page it says:
By arrangement with A.C. McClurg & Co.
Made in the United States of America

It has 319 pages. Detailed black ink drawings throughout.

I have hunted and hunted for info on this book...if anyone could help I would appreciate it.

1. Is there an ISBN number on it?

It may pre-date the ISBN system. Try taking it to a book dealer.

7. Looks like a first edition

I have one from a library resale long long ago "Tarzan and the Leopard Men", blue cover. Is this a collector's question? They probably are only worth 50 at best unless autographed by the author himself.

THere is no real way to be sure how much it is worth without research.

5. DO you know to look

for the "book club circle" on the back cover.

Also, the binding cloth on first editions is usually "striped."

6. Addall is your friend

a nice meta-search engine of all bookseller sites. Usually the Grossett Dunlap stuff is reprint of other editions and not worth a ton. From what I see it ranges (at quick glance) from 8-25$.

16. You have a Grosset & Dunlap reprint-here's how to research a book

When checking prices on addall.com throw out the highest and lowest as some sellers will ask double, triple or even 10 times what a book is worth.

Look on the title page for the name of the publisher. The date you see on the copyright page is the usually the date the book was first printed, but not the date your's was printed as Grosset & Dunlap bought reprint rights.

First do a search on addall.com by price descending. This will usually let you know who published the first edition and sometimes you can find key points to help identify if the book you are searching for is truley a first. (such as number of lines in colophon, number of pages, possible printing errors and if so what page they are located on).

Since the first edition of your book was published by A. C. McClurg and your's shows G&D on the spine, you will not be rolling in the big $$$$. Grosset & Dunlap are a reprint house, but once in a while they do print first editions, just not is your case.

Next refine your search in the boxes at the bottom of the page using Grosset and sometimes the date you found (1919).

When trying to price your copy scroll down to the first group of listings without a dustjacket (throwing out the highest priced one at $165 and the one that claims to be a 1st edition even though published by G&D).

Next look at condition of the remaining books and they seem to be in good condition (which really means poor).

I would put the value at $15-25 depending on where you plan to sell it and if you want the fast nickel or the slow dime.
