A wonderful book by Patricia Highsmith

I just finished a beautifully written book by the late Patricia Highsmith titled "The Price of Salt." (She also wrote "Strangers on a Train" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley"). It takes place in New York in the early 1950's and is the story of two women who met in the toy department in a New York City department store during the Christmas shopping rush. The depth of the writing can not be overstated. I think many people here would truly enjoy reading it.

4. i have read all of her ripley books except one (there are 5)

thanks for reminding me to get that one from the library.."the boy who followed ripley" is the last one I need to read. I didn't read them in order..

Highsmith has a way of making you root for the bad guy. My sister has read her other works and loves them. I haven't had a chance to read anything but the four Ripley books. I love them. :thumbsup:

5. If you like Patricia Highsmith's work,

be sure to skip the movie made of "The Talented Mr. Ripley." One of my best friends is her literary executor, worked on that script, and finally quit in disgust. It's hardly an adequate translation of her brilliant work.

But, there is another that barely made it into national distribution here in the US (in fact, it did very well in Europe), starring John Malkovitch, made from the book called "Ripley's Game." It's absolutely as startling and dangerous and outstanding as anything Ms. Highsmith ever wrote.

Don't miss it.

6. wow. I didn't know about the Malkovich movie. I didn't mind

"the talented mr. ripley" movie but I saw it long before I ever read the book. It was quite different than the book, you are correct. I really want to see the movie you mention badly. I just read ripley's game about 3 months ago...

7. If anything,

the Malkovich movie is far more chilling than the book. A fabulous surprise. Do see it.

I'm gonna watch it again, I think.
