Dan Brown's DECEPTION POINT is really good!

I'm actually liking it better than THE DAVINCI CODE. It's twisted a couple of times in ways I didn't expect, and includes some political intrigue. It's kept me absorbed for two days on breaks at work.

1. Angels & Demons is a great read, too.

If you haven't read it, I recommend it. Dan Brown is an exceptional author.

I love how he sets up numerous impossible situations and then writes his way out of them.

I appreciated but didn't care for DIGITAL FORTRESS because the climactic finale of hackers going through layers of firewall to the government computers is all displayed on a giant plasma screen like a video game.

Angels and Demons fools you into thinking the book is over then suddenly plunges into almost a completely new story.

I'm almost to the end of DECEPTION POINT which is really good so far.

5. Don't like Dan Brown all that much.

To me, he's one of the authors who write exciting, page turning novels, but wouldn't be able to write at all without their editor's help, and their books look like they're the same book every time, but it's been put through a word processing program that rearranges the words. That way they can write the same book about 20 times. Other members of this unhappy clique include Tom Clacy, Clive Cussler, and Michael Chrichton.

11. That sounds about right

A friend who really liked The Da Vinci Code lamented Brown's formulaic writing style, such that the next two books he read were nearly identical in structure (he told me) to The Code.

All four books start in exactly the same way: The victim's eye view of his own murder.

I thought that was the most awful book I have ever read! It was on the verge of ridiculous. I know it is fiction and all, but come on!! But, I am glad you enjoyed it. :)

kind of a "fastfood" type of writing. Lots of fat, sugar, and salt, but no real nutrition or substance.

10. I LOVE Dan Brown...

My favorite was A&D....the most intriguing, to me, but all his books are really cool.

14. I finished it recently and while I don't think it's Pulitzer material...

...thought it was a fun diversion.

I liked the creative use of urine and duct tape in an escape...lol

The one thing that made me really roll my eyes was that the Republican politician was anti-NASA and thought we should instead be spending our tax dollars on education and universal health care. Give me a break. In what freaky, backwards, parallel universe to Repubs give a flying fig about public education and affordable health care?

15. I've read all of Brown's books, and this one is... (spoilers)

probably my favorite. I also liked Angels and Demons, but Deception Point, despite the formula, has likeable characters, great imagery, and lots of action (some of it not too believable, but fun all the same). When the senator "gets it" in the end it is predictable, but funny. And Corky's escape from the sharks is too good...

18. Dan Brown & 24 hours

Da Vinci Code was fun, and brought the squabbles over what belonged in the sacred canon and what didn't into fairly sharp focus. But I can only take about one book about solving a world crisis in 24 hours every few years. Sorry, but Dan Brown just don't cut it for me.

he is a very gifted author and can't wait to read Angels and Demons. I'll have to read Deception Point next

20. Is the Robert Langdon character in DECEPTION POINT?

My daughter is becoming enamored with that character and is begging for more books with him in it. I was going to pick up ANGELS AND DEMONS for her this weekend.

It's fun to watch her get so enthused about something other than Harry Potter. I went through a similar phase when I first came across the Jason Bourne character years ago. I know these books are not great literature and they follow a formula, but they are entertaining diversions.
