The Cell - Stephen King

Anyone reading this? I'm 1/4 into it. The plot involves a 'pulse' delivered via cell phones that turns people into raving maniacs. The story hasn't gotten to the point of who planted it, Terrorist?. It was worldwide & basically ended life as we know it. The "phone crazies" are the people affected by the 'pulse' and they flock like birds with a common mind. The normal people, who don't have cell phones, have to travel at night because the crazies nest at night. Its weird reading a King novel that refernces Katrina, Al Queda and other current issues.

Anyone else read it yet? I've read a lot of King's early stuff but not much after "It". I have to admit I like a good scary story. This one draws heavily on "Living Dead" movies.

3. You have to love Stephen King

His books are great and anyone who makes a peace sign out of Christmas lights
during the Holidays is one good guy.

It's a damn good book. Interesting story, pretty solid characters. Not a lot of fluff and filler. Good read from beginning to end.

7. It's the best thing he's written in YEARS

outside of the Dark Tower stuff. No ending that'll make you sit there and go 'wtf' like so many of them do...and it doesn't go on 6 chapters beyond where it should quit.

9. Liked it at first...

I gave up King years ago. The zombie concept lured me in. The Cell starts out at great guns, in King's early classic form. Then towards the end the plotting seemed to run out of steam. Not that I can complain about a popcorn read out of the library.

10. I've been listening to it on CDs

and I love it. I also gave up on King years ago, although I've always loved his books - they're just too long for my short attention span. Listening while driving (and NOT talking on my cell phone) is the way to go! Great story.

12. Very derivative of The Stand

I saw similarities in the dreams and telepathy. Remember how the survivors in The Stand all had the same dream and were all directed to the same place? But it was okay, even if it covered a lot of the same ground. Maybe he just needs some new ideas.
