Attention Sub Sailors

Just finished a pretty good read: "Dangerous Ground" by Larry Bond. A sub on its way to be decommissioned is called to action for a top secret presidential mission. Two female scientists are onboard and the hero is a former Navy flyboy converted to Sub Duty because of Medical Reasons and a little help from his Uncle the Senator. Throw in a corrupt Russian General and a secret far below the Northern Sea and ya have a pretty good Sub Yarn.

3. Fly boy on a sub? Recipe for disaster!

I've got a novel about a US nuke boat fighting the drug wars with a diesel WWII sub silouhette on the cover...and a novel about a WWII brit boat with a US nuke boat on the cover.

5. Interesting contrast

between his time in a squadron wardroom and then being put on a sub with a grumpy son of a bitch for a Skipper who leads by intimidation and fear. The fly-boy LTJG has a Senior Chief working for him who has an enormous hardon for the pilot. Interesting look at life underway (especially with two female civilians onboard.)

Thats the reason it is known as the secret silent service.If you have ever been a sub sailor than you know it is not uncommon for scientist to be aboard. And the secret presidential mission thing, all subs are tied to the pentagon and the white house directly.Essientially this is to say the president is in charge.He can drive it from the whitehouse war room. ,too.Cold war communications.The reaility of it is even better.

7. Way too claustropobic for Sub Duty

have there been female scientists on subs underway? The Sub got its orders and headed for the North Sea. There was no communication with the White House in the book, but one of the scientists was sweating bullets that her political mission would fail. Thanks for the insight.

9. Famous story of two downed RAF pilots in WWII

In the Med. They were floating in their lifeboat and they see a periscope...then a whole sub. A guy pops out of the conning tower, leans over and says, "you chaps need a lift?" Did they!

What they didn't know was that they had to spend the next two weeks on the sub during North Africa operations before being let out in Egypt.

They didn't like it one bit!

11. I've visited WWII subs

in Philly and Baltimore. I don't believe I could stand to be onboard submerged in one of them for any amount of time. I'd go insane. It obviously took a certain kind of human to endure that stress.

If you haven't visited it in the past couple of years, I can assure you it's a lot more authentic now!

13. I truly appreciate

those military displays. My father in law served in the Navy and they visited us when I was stationed in Philly back in the 80's. We took him to the Aberdeen Army Base. They have an incredibly impressive display of Army Armament. My FIL loved the visit.

Thanks for maintaining our history and thanks for the info. We just might head that way.
