Clive Cussler / Adventure fans! I'm looking for a book title.

Back in 1996, I was talking with a guy at work about Clive Cussler.

He sez, "Remember that one where in the first chapter, Dirk Pitt was mountain-climbing, and he gets a phone call, and he pulls out a palmtop, and solves the problem hanging upside-down from a rope?"

I sez, "That sounds really cool, but that's not from a Clive Cussler book."

Him: "Are you sure?"

Me: "Yep, I've read them all, and that's not in any of the books. But I'd like to read that. Do you remember the title?"

Him: "Nope, sorry."

For years I've wondered what this book is. It's definitely not Cussler, but what is it? Anyone know?

Anyone? Bueller?
