John Gierach's angling books |

I was given Trout Bum a couple of years ago. Now I have the lot except for the early volumes. The man writes in a spiritual way about his craft and he shuns celebrity status.
Fishing might be regarded as a redneck activity in some quarters. For me, it's a great way of getting away from it all. I'm lucky because I have access to loads of water in the north of Scotland.

1. Gierach's best work will stand with any in the genre. |

In the end, it is his character (or persona) and that of his angling friends AK and the others which draw us to his writing.
"Fishing might be regarded as a redneck activity in some quarters."
Do we really need to consider the opinion of anyone who thinks so?
One of the grand old men of outdoors writing died last week, Charles Waterman. Gierach admired his style.
