I rarely read Oprah book club books but this one is awesome

1. Yep

I did a report on Wiesel for college and he's great. :) I found the book at this book store at my local mall for two bucks and it was great! It was like it was just waiting for me. :D

2. this is an Oprah Book?

really? normally her books have a life lesson, nice and uplifting at the end, this certainly doesn't, and the fact that it is true (no, not James Frey True, really true) is devastating. It is really one of the books that should be read by everyone in school. And even better, Wiesel walked the talk for the remainder of his life (you'll recall he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

4. there are huge gaps in my edjumacashun

I only went one semester to college (health concerns) Reading recommendations found over the years at DU have been priceless in helping to fill in the gaps

5. it was required reading in Middle School for me

we did a unit on the Holocaust. I think middle school is a bit young, but since it was school we got through it. Course, my mom is a history teacher, who designed the unit, so I had some backstopping. we also read 1984, Brave New World and others, my Mom has a thing for anti-fascists.

And 17 years later, I still get chills thinking about the book. It's one of the few that I simply cannot pick up and read again, although I should, simply remembering it makes me ill.

6. you are fortunate

the required reading list in Middle School (called Jr High in my day, in the mid 50s)was highly forgettable

10. I made a big fuss about the 7th graders reading this book

Sorry but it is too much for some 7th graders. It freaked my son out and there are better books for this age group.
High school maybe but not 13 year olds.

3. Excellent read...

just finished it...tear jerker for sure...

Now, I urge you to also read "Justice and Only Justice" by Naim Ateek.

Those two books should be required reading, back to back, IMHO.

7. Elie Weasel, you mean?

Good book, imo, a great first-hand account of the Holocaust. It's author, however, has become a right-wing hypocrite, who encouraged * to go into Iraq.
