The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight by Thom Hartmann........ |
|
if you read and liked Ishmael by Daniel Quinn you MUST read this book...even if you haven't, it is a MUST read for everyone...my 13 year old daughter was captured by this book and she is now actively enlightening her classmates and is working on making Chapter 1 of Hartmann's book into a science project for the science expo ...i am so proud of her. It is a passionate, visionary call to enlightened consciousness that combines spiritual thought and ecological principles to promote a positive future for the planet and its inhabitants.
The Fate of the World and What We Can Do Before It's Too Late! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"A wake-up call, loud and clear, that must literally be heard around the world -- and the sooner the better, for us and especially for our children." --Daniel Quinn, author of Ishmael
Sunlight warms the Earth with life. As our culture moved from ancient hunting/gathering times to the technological era, we discovered ancient sunlight -- captured millions of years ago by plants and compressed into oil deep under our soil and oceans. Now, as our planet's oil supplies are projected to last no more than thirty to fifty years, and species and cultures are dying off at an unprecedented rate, we confront difficult choices.
In this passionate and thoroughly researched book, Hartmann proposes that the only lasting solution to the crises we face is to relearn the lessons of our ancient ancestors -- who lived sustainably for thousands of generations.
When you touch this new yet ancient way of seeing the world and hearing the voice of all life, you discover that you, personally, hold the power of personal and planetary transformation. In that breathtaking moment we see both a possible future for the survival of humanity and the fulfillment of our highest dreams and aspirations.

1. I really dug Ishmael and thought Story of B was even better |
|
I'll have to check it out.
One more thing, the civilizational question has been out there for quite a while and most of it has originated from the anarchist milieu. Look up people like John Zerzan and Derrick Jensen.

It took forever to get through though. I had to take a breather every few pages. That book covers everything, and really lays the situation we've gotten ourselves into on the table.

3. I am reading it now. I'm on chapter 5, |
|
The Death of Trees.
It's very good, but I can only read a few chapters at a time as it is rather depressing, too. It should be required reading for EVERYONE!! I'm going to give a copy to my repub mother for the holidays, along with Thom's other book, "We the People: A Call to Take Back America". I think your daughter would like that book too. It's kind of comic book fashion, but the message is so important. She sounds wonderful, btw!

4. I read this book this past spring |
|
and thought it was one of the very best on the subject. I never look at a tree like before. When I burn wood in my fireplace I think about the sunlight sparking out to make me warm. Very good book.

7. On my list of the many books |
|
that I know are must reads. I'd like to recommend Derrick Jensen's "A Language Older Than Words" as a sort of companion piece. I know folks who loved both "Ishmael" and "A Language Older Than Words", similar ideas and wavelengths run throughout each book. I read "A Language..." a few weeks ago and was incredibly moved and inspired. There CAN be a better world.

8. I thought about that book when I was in the majestic Redwoods |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 01:38 PM by Sequoia
last week. Went camping up in Gualala and saw a few old growth trees that looked liked Sequois (hey, that's me!)and my daughter (10) asked me what trees were made of so I brought up this book. It is one of the best I've read and I've read maybe a million books by now. As I walked through the forest and looked up at those trees I just hoped they'd always be there and not clear cut like so many other forests. Very beautiful let me tell you. Oh heck, seems I've posted on this before.
