"Confessions of a Former Dittohead" by Jim Derych |
|
I picked up this book at my local Barnes & Noble store yesterday. It was quite an interesting read. It recalled the journey of Jim Derych from Theo-Conservative to Liberal Democrat. Mr Derych was introduced to conservatism by his father, a Nixon Republican. During Watergate, the senior Mr Derych accused the "liberal" media of hounding Nixon until he resigned. Young Jim was introduced to Rush Limbaugh by his father. He was on his way to his freshman year in college.
While in college, Jim listened to Rush Limbaugh and believed everything that came out of his mouth. He explains how the mind of a dittohead works. Mr Derych also discussed his evolution from a dittohead to a didiot. His transformation began as he got exposure to the real world. Mr Derych describes his transformation from Theo-Conservative to Liberal Democrat as "a thousand small cuts" instead of a few large cuts. "Confessions" discusses the political, economic and social issues of today and how a dittohead see it. It is quite a trip into the mind of the dittohead.
As is usually discussed in the boards in DU, Mr Derych also suggests using small issues in order to influence the dittohead instead of the large ones. The final straw came when the Repubs tried to legislate morality. It was then time for Jim Derych to come out of the closet as a Liberal Democrat.
As well as writing his popular diary for the "Daily Kos", Mr Derych is also very active in his local Democratic party. He refers to himself as a lifelong liberal.
