Mavericks of the Sky: The First Daring Pilots of the U.S. Air Mail |
|
I'm about 1/2 through this and it's a great read.
I always knew the earliest Air Mail pilots had a horrible survival rate, but this was one of the most dangerous jobs ever in this country. As a private pilot myself, I was absolutely floored though by what these men did. No attitude indicators, no altimeters, bad compasses, planes that had a maximum speed just beyond their stall speed, forced to fly in all kinds of weather...this was suicide.
Anyway, so far it's very well researched and comes with some great old photos of these extremely brave men.

Just got a little higher. I'm lucky my local library has a 'my list' where I can park book recommendations! (I'm going through a bunch of the sea stories from www.bookmarksmagazine.com, 101 Crackerjack Sea Stories. The Enemy Below, right now.)
