I've read some books like that (I think). If they're the ones I think you're talking about "The Chalice and the Blade" is the best one by far.

The general editors are: Georges Duby and Michelle Perrot
Pauline Scmitt Pantel is the Editor (all three editors are professors of history)
and Arthur Goldhammer is the translator (a lot of the early chapters are taken from Greek mythology)..

The one I thought you were talking about is "The Myth of the Goddess: Evolution of an Image" by Anne Baring and Jules Cashford.
One of my favorites in the genre also.
