I'm about to launch into Stanley: The Impossible Life of Africa's Greatest Explorer |
|
by Tim Jeal.
I was motivated to buy this book strangely enough by seeing a movie about Stanley with Spencer Tracy last week. It made me want to know more.

3. I think he was a Confederate soldier |
|
during the Civil War and was captured at Shiloh. Then he served in the union navy to get out of prison. Quite an interesting life if I'm remembering correctly.
From England, served on ship as youth, got off in New Orleans and was adopted by a southern family.
Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

her to cannibals to document and sketch how she was cooked and eaten. Stanley only found out when Jameson had died of fever."
