Inglorious Basterds! *spoilers* |
|
Such a great fucking movie.
Hard to watch this in its moments, bloodshed and all. But the payoff was seeing Hitler killed in that theater in Paris. I didn't know this! They never told us this!
Such a great movie.
I had no idea!
Bravo for exposing the Truth.
Who would imagined that?

I get historical fiction, but what have been a good movie was simply shot due to lack of editing and lack of story line.

Went in expecting a movie about Brad Pitt and a rag-tag group of soldiers going into France to kick German ass, and ended up seeing a slow moving piece of crap about a Jewish girl with a movie theater getting hit on by an obnoxious Nazi war hero.

5. I would surmise that those of us who have had relatives who have ACTUALLY killed and died |
|
in REAL WAR, may consider such a demented view as too close to "the animal - terrorist" that comes out fully during such insanity.
It's just too damn close to those of us who have seen the aftermath of what war does to soldiers and their family members.
Not all that unlike the way relatives of people killed by psychotic murderers would view the flick "Natural Born Killers."
Too close to appreciate any artistic value ... dark humor brings out horrific memories of real life trauma. :(

16. Actually, "Basterds" - an intentionally unrealistic movie, does |
|
deal with the soldier's perspective. The Nazi hero sniper, when confronted with his exploits onscreen, is more sickened than exalted by his killing. Meanwhile, his Nazi bosses, portrayed as comic books figures, are laughing their asses off at the killing -- which is, again, a statement of those who fight, and those who don't. Maybe you were in the lobby getting popcorn and missed the movie's point here. Which, ironically, are YOUR points as well.

that occur every damn day. Have you?
WAR IS REAL terrorism - animistic - inhumane - insanity.
I don't need a movie to remind me of what is truly horrific ... and far too often REAL.

12. No, but I know that some of us with military backgrounds and combat vets within |
|
our family find it a little "too close" to the horrific truth.
I don't let myself off the hook because I DID enjoy "Natural Born Killers" in a demented and dark way. THEN I *reflected* about it's content. If I had been the sister or mother of someone who was killed by someone psychotic, I would not have enjoyed that flick.
No, I'm not being dogmatic because "one's taste" in dark and violent movies depends upon life experience and background.
Please fully enjoy without my censure - but hesitate before you find yourself celebrating WAR? Why? It CAN be as disgustingly savage as what has been depicted by Taratino in his dark films ... some behaviors *even worse* if you can imagine the most depraved actions of humankind. That's all I ask. :-) :hi:

|
The trailers, the movie posters, are always not exactly what is portrayed. For instance, just about all the 'hunting' Aldo Raine's team does, is in the trailer.
When I first saw dusk till dawn, I thought it was some screwed up gory crime thriller, then blammo, vampires out of left field. Did not see that coming at all.

8. I don't understand those bashing this movie. |
|
First, take some responsibility here. You know what QT's movies are like by now. You've seen "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction". There will be blood. So, if that offends you, don't go. Second, the tone of "Basterds" is deliberately unrealistic. It's an intentional comic book. The violence isn't realistic. The history isn't factual. It's "Terry and the Pirates." So, if that kind of dramatic license isn't understandable to you, or offends you, don't go. As for the long cafe scenes, I appreciate a film that takes its time to build the suspense. I loved those scenes. Again, taking in conversation is a leap for some viewers. They should stay with Chuck Norris movies. As for those who have actually been in combat being offended by the comic book violence in this movie, I can't speak to that from personal experience. Perhaps that is a legitimate complaint. My son, an active duty Marine with 3 combat tours, liked the movie. Perhaps some soldiers and Marines can separate their experiences from moviemaking. And some can't. That's understandable.

I hope that Hollywood does a full length picture on the life of Julia Child. Meryl Streep and the characters surrounding HER were awesome in that flick. There was so much more they could have developed. Child's sister was "a hoot" ... I would have liked to have seen more of her.

Much better movie. Plenty of blood and well beyond a "lets kill some nazis for revenge." motif.
It's a little thing called "story"/"plot" and it leaves you thinking for days about the film afterward as opposed to that 15 minutes of post orgasm adrenaline BS.

I've been thinking about the movie constantly since I saw it on Monday, and can't wait to see it again. It had a great story and plot, masterful direction, great dialog, etc. Stop looking down your nose and acting all high brow. No one says you have to like it, but stop acting like the ones who do are beneath you and don't know good films. You sound like the people harping on video games for not being as thoughtful as the entertainment THEY like. "Oh, gamers, they just like the blood and violence, they don't care about stuff like an actual story." That's exactly how you come across. I'm sure District 9 is a very cool movie. I KNOW Basterds is a very cool movie. Why act like the one you like is the only smart one of the two, and anyone who likes this is a simpleton?

It's like this FB, "Basterds" is popcorn. Everyone likes popcorn...but it's not good for you. "District 9" is like a full course meal. It's what Sci-Fi is all about: putting modern problems in frame by using a plausible but hypothetical story.
Comparing "Basterds" to "District 9" is kind of like comparing "Doom" (the original back in the day...not Doom 3.) to "Bioshock". Sure the former has got fun...but no substance.
Low art to high art. In 5 years folks won't be talking about basterds. District 9 will spawn a following not unlike "Close Encounters" or "Alien(s)".
On the positive I did like Tarentino's use of "The Green Leaves of Summer" in the opening credits. Awesome spaghetti western tune.

They why do it? They aren't meant to be the same type of movie. That's like complaining that Terms of Endearment isn't the same as The French Connection. I think Frank Sinatra's music is total popcorn fluff compared to Deathspell Omega, but I can still appreciate them both. I judge movies (and music, games, and books) based on what they're trying to be, not what I want them to be.
In 5 years folks won't be talking about basterds.
I literally heard that exact same quote when Pulp Fiction came out, yet it's still talked about all the time, and references to it litter pop culture now (Mmm, that IS a tasty burger!). And considering that many, myself included, think this is easily his best movie since Pulp Fiction, I'd bet the rent money that people most certainly will be talking about it still, while District 9, being a thinking man's sci-fi, will fade to obscurity in a culture that thinks Independence Day is the epitome of quality science fiction.

I mean it did have that fighter pilot president leading his troops like some kind of Roman General in the end.
Star Wars/Trek, Close Encounters, E.T., and shit even Solaris (the original slow as molasses Russian flick) inspire the imagination and have higher points AND explosions (Maybe not Solaris and E.T.)
Even if you are not a thinking man you can love those movies...and think about them.
And you may be right about folks talking about Basterds...but I doubt it. Personally, Kill Bill (part one at least), and Sukiyaki Western: Django were better. Grind House was better IMHO (the first half..."Bulletproof" was OK...Zoe's stunts saved it.).

31. High art? Are you high? (**D9 spoilers**) |
|
Requisite disclaimer: I liked the movie.
The bad guys in this film - Multi National United, which might as well have been Generic Evil Corporation - tried to vivisect the protagonist, and didn't even think to strap him down first. Said protagonist had cheerfully fried prawn eggs with a flamethrower in a previous scene.
Meanwhile, you've got all these Nigerian gangsters running around acting about as cartoonish as the voodoo cult in Live and Let Die - yet somehow the film is supposed to be a powerful anti-racist statement. Huh?
Then you have the old "Go on without me!" "No, I won't leave you!" bit at the end - the hoariest of old chestnuts known to film.
If District 9 is high art, Metal Gear Solid 4 is Shakespeare spliced with Rembrandt.

I enjoyed it for what it was, but the opening scene suggested to me that Quinton Tarantino can make a really powerful film about the Holocaust using nothing but his standard formula, and I sort of wish he has pursued that rather than going down the more farcical direction the film ended up in.
