Kenny Burrell fans...I'm looking for more CDs like "Soul Call." |
|
So far I've heard Midnight Blue, Blues - The Common Ground, Lucky So And So, Stormy Monday Blues, All Night Long, and Soul Call.
So far, "Soul Call" is my hands-down favorite, because I prefer his playing in a more laid back, small combo setting...NO horn section.
I've cherry-picked Wes Montgomery's catalog in a similar fashion, avoiding his much-maligned, highly commercial era...things like "Misty," "Here's That Rainy Day" (which Burrell also covers)...that kind of jazz guitar.
Haven't explored Joe Pass yet, although I get a feeling he's the next logical step.
But if you have any Burrell recommendations for albums in the spirit of Soul Call, I'd welcome them. "Stormy Monday Blues" is excellent, and "Lucky So And So" has a few excellen tracks, but I wasn't exactly floored by the vocals.

1. "In a Mellow Tone" doesn't have any brass. |
|
...has "Tenderly" and "Willow Weep For Me" on it.
