ABC cancels "All My Children", "One Life to Live"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – ABC television said on Thursday it was canceling its long-running daytime soap operas "All My Children" and "One Life to Live".

The final episodes of the two shows will air in September 2011 and January 2012 respectively, ABC said in a statement.

ABC said the two soap operas would be replaced by new programing focused on "transformation, food and lifestyle", saying that audience research had shown that these issues were of more interest to viewers.

"All My Children", about the lives of resident in fictional Pine Valley, made its debut on ABC in 1970. "One Life to Live" set in the fictional town of Llanview, began airing in 1968. Both shows have won multiple awards, including daytime Emmys, and earned praise for tackling social issues including alcoholism, AIDS and illiteracy.

Sheesh, began watching this is 1972 when Phillip was Erica's beau of the day and he supposedly died in Viet Nam.

I haven't watched either in decades, but I do remember watching both with Grandma... in black and white.

4. I don't like daytime tv much, in general...

But, you have to say those soaps have had staying power. Given how many food and "life tranformative" shows are now running on various cable channels, not to mention how many have crept over into network tv already, I have to doubt this is going to have the same lifespan. :shrug:

Frankly, I hate the fact that so much "reality" tv has removed any creativity in 99% of the programming. Cheaper to toss the writers and complex sets required for any more theatrical offerings. We are the worse for this ongoing trend, IMO.

I watched it once for a week when I had the flu.

7. I used to watch all of them when at home with young children. Couldn't miss...

....a day. Favorite: As the World Turns. Was watching it when Kennedy was shot & Walter Chronkite interrupted with the awful news. Eventually my life turned into its own soap opera, and I quit watching cold turkey, all of them. I became frustrated that the characters never resolved their problems, just went on and on.......and on. I hoped to grow out of my problems and grow.

...back in the days of Dr. Steve Hardy & Jessie. And now, it's the last soap standing.
