The argument proponents of the practice make is that these guys would have done it anyway, only with a real child. But there is really no way to know whether that would hold true in all cases. In response to persons on Hansen's show who claim, "This is the first time I have ever done anything like this," Hansen says, in effect, "That's what everybody tells me." And I have no doubt that is true. But just because that claim is frequently made even by repeat offenders does not mean that, in at least some of the cases, it isn't true.

Perverted Justice, the organization which works with Dateline on these shows, actually trains actors to effectively seduce those who contact them. Now, one can argue -- quite truthfully -- that no one twisted the arms of these men to give in to the seduction and follow through. That is certainly true. But it's a bit like putting an alcoholic alone in a room full of liquor and acting surprised when his willpower dissolves and he takes a drink.

He's the one putting it on TV for ratings. And now he's the one who's fodder to be gawked at. People love their prurient entertainment. He was all to happy to provide it. Now he's on the other end. That's my take on it. I have no love for child rapists.

I never liked Chris Hansen. He came across as smarmy and douchey in the "shows" - while the people in the back and the police do the actual work. He acted like a carnival barker, which only served to give sympathy to the undeserving child predators. I think it's funny he got caught on camera cheating on his wife.
