And please lock this with my apologies if it is deemed inappropriate.
I'm going to sell an old Johnson 1850's wall map that I bought back in the 70's. It's roughly 5' x 6' in size. I have had it rolled and sealed for the last 25 years with the hope that I would eventually have enough disposable income to frame it properly.
It's hand colored paper on canvas showing the Panama railway, trails, Indian Territories and a complete census of literate and illiterate folks of the two major races they were concerned about. I'll post pieces of the most historical document that I own either tomorrow or Thursday, time depending on how busy I get. :)
Damn, I hate to sell this. I'm going to where it's stored tomorrow to take pics and there was worming before and I hope that I don't go back to a tube of dust when I go shoot. This economy bit me in my ass big time.
Anyway, if anyone is interested I'll post pics here after I take them. It's going to be sad to see this leave my hands.
Goddamn it. I hate this.

4. I've been keeping it at my parent's house since the 70's |
|
I plan on unrolling it on the floor for the pics and carefully re-rolling it and placing it back in the tube I have for it. It's really very delicate.
I bought it at auction in Chattanooga in '75 for peanuts and have been hording it for quite some time. After all the research I have done, it appears that there are only two other existing copies according to the National Archives.
I'll try to get them up in a separate post within the next day or so with links to high res photos for those interested.

5. Ebay is not the best idea |
|
Before you do that, take a few days to contact appropriate antique dealers. Ebay was never the best place to get a good dollar for antiques, and it's worse now with the economy bad. That's not to say there aren't people out there who will still pay top dollar for certain antiques, and still have the money to do it. Make sure you try to find them before you go the Ebay route.

6. If you do list it on ebay |
|
Make sure you protect yourself by either making it a Buy It Now/Best Offer to what you believe is the fair market value, or else putting a fair market value reserve price if you do an auction. The latter can be expensive in listing fees, but you don't want to risk having very low-bidders making off with your antique map for pennies on the dollar.
