1. I'm not in the market but...

Congrats on moving to a great platform. I made the move about three years ago and don't regret it for a second. I will say that I am typing this response on a Acer Aspire One Netbook which has Linpus as it's operating system. I lost my job and my laptop ans figured I'd spend the big bucks on a new laptop when I got a new job. Until then this Acer is a blast.

Acer is a good brand. They bought Gateway, which was a good brand too... I still prefer the Mac and given I could either spend $2800 for a Windows license for my Adobe collection software or get a new Mac notebook, I chose the latter.

8. Gateway hasn't been a good brand in about 10 years.

I've had multiple nightmares with them, including a laptop that was replaced a totoal of 5 times in 2 years (until the Best Buy warranty ran out). Display kept going out, causing flickering of the screen and eventually display death. Over and over and over.

That was just the most recent experience.

3. IMO, you're asking far too little for that home built pc.

You could easily get double that amount. The individual parts alone are worth at least $1200 new, plus taxes...

4. They are used...

The CPU alone does sell for $329 new nowadays... like from newegg.

I'm also targeting audiences that don't give a shit about quality.

I'm prepared to take the hit.

A flyer at work vanished, so if I don't hear back by Monday I'm reposting (maybe for $100 more).

Desktop hardware does lose value quickly, even if it's modern. And people have that nice warm fuzzy feeling about buying new... new and cheap. No amount of technical detail would convince them...

I might sell pieces later on if nothing else...

The mobo retailed for $229 at the time... I prefer high quality gear... but home-built has the stigma of being 'cheap' too. People would rather buy a HDell and then bitch about the quality...

7. I'm with you on the quality thing. I just picked up the new Gigabyte Ultra-Durable

motherboard with a Phenom Black edition CPU. High quality aftermarket heatsink/fans on the video, cpu, etc. I basically replaced everything in my case except the DVD drive.

I've got my old computer that's only 2 years old but was top of the line then as well, but having a hard time for the same reason... people don't trust home-built computers no matter how high quality. I find them a little easier to sell if I throw in a year of tech support and let them know that if any component fails I'll swap it out for the new one and make sure it works, and they just pay for parts.

On a side note, the Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P is the best motherboard I have ever used. Sturdy as hell, made for overclocking so it has things like a backup bios, bios profiles, and great cooling due to the extra layers and thickness of the board. The Phenom AM2+ Triple Core 2.8GHz CPU that I'm using is currently running at 3.4GHz with only a 2C increase in heat... just by increasing the multiplier. The best thing is that it does the voltage adjustments for you based on your other settings. It's pretty much idiot proof.

It also supports the ATI hybrid graphics so my 1GB ATI HD 4670 has its own dedicated RAM plus another 512MB or so from the onboard ATI chipset (even though there isn't a video out on the board itself).

10. Being that AMD may be in the toilet, your homebrew is a viable alternative

to my scratch building an Intel gaming system. I have tapped my black AMD's out and it's time to dip my toe into the Intel pool. Looks like there could be a bidding war a brewing. The video card alone is still in the $225 range. Installing WIN7 RC on an AMD X64 4800 today, so I may be busy the rest of the day (the Win7 beta PC is up on the shelf in the closet).
