Seahawks reach agreement with Sidney Rice

The Seahawks have an agreement to add Sidney Rice, Vikings wide receiver.

The agreement was first reported by Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, who stated it was a five-year deal. The Seattle Times subsequently confirmed there was an agreement in place with Rice, though he can not sign a contract until Friday, presumably after undergoing a physical examination.

Rice, 24, is a 6-foot-4 receiver, who has caught 12 touchdowns in the past two seasons. He gained more than 1,300 yards in 2009 when he established himself as an elite receiver in the NFL. He was limited by a hip injury last season.

The acquisition of Rice would mean the Seahawks finally got the big-budget, big-name receiver they've been targeting ever since Pete Carroll arrived as coach.

Seattle courted Brandon Marshall of Denver last season before the Broncos wound up trading him to Miami. The Seahawks later inquired about adding Vincent Jackson of San Diego, whom the Chargers did not trade.

I think this is a great pickup for Seattle. I think he was injured most of last year but in 2009 he was one of the best receivers for the season.

letting go of the best QB we ever had, doesn't make sense...and for T. Jackson? Damn...I might as well start the Draft Ichiro Org, he can play QB! :D

I'm still haunted by the R. Mirer years....guys' best receiver was the turf.

It is hard to find a good QB, but, as the Packers learned a couple years too late, it's not bad to move on when the signs are clear.

7. They were, however Seattle WAY overpaid for Rice.

$41mil/5yrs! For a guy whose best (and only complete) season came with Brett Favre throwing him the ball in the best season of HIS career.

But he's still very young and could end up being a superstar. He certainly made more than a few Randy Moss-type catches with the Vikes.

8. I was impressed with Rice that season

They won some games because he made huge plays down field. One in particularly was against Baltimore, credit Farve with the throw of course but Rice made a very difficult catch with a defender on his back. 41 million isn't really a lot over a 5-year period. It is higher than average but on the free agency market teams tend to overpay for the players they get because of the bidding wars with other teams. To get the player you want you have to offer that player more than team's are willing to spend and that can get pretty high. I was glad Cardinals lost out Rolle last year but not Dansby even though I thought both of the contracts they received was higher than their value. I felt Dansby was a little closer to value.

5. The bonus is that they also kept him away from Bradford and the Rams.

And, yeah, Seattle's QB situation is a bit of a mess, but the best thing you can do for a mediocre QB is give him a playmaker who has tremendous ball skills, and that's exactly what Sidney Rice is.

Mike Williams underneath and Rice over the top is a very nice synergy in the passing game.
