Look at that Little Monkey Run! - Unidentified Howard Cosell Comment |
|
Help. I have personally screened master tape footage of several NFL games and documented where and when Howard Cosell included "little monkey" comments, during games but the third one still eludes me. Chris Berman rekindled my interest in this subject after saying "Look at that little Meggett run! in the 2005 version of The Longest Yard.
There were THREE separate "little monkey" comments made by Cosell, (not just one or two).
#1. August 29, 1972 K.C. Chiefs vs. N.Y. Giants preseason HOF game (Mike Adamle) "You know that little monkey... again, the theorem was that he was too small for pro football." -COSELL
#2. "Look at that little monkey run" -COSELL In the early 70's one reliable source remembers Cosell saying something like... "He's on the 20... the 30... the 35... he cuts upfield... cuts back... the 45... 50... one man to beat.... LOOK... AT... THAT... LITTLE... MONKEY... RUN!!" Because Howard Cosell was only the color-commentator and never called the game play-by-play, Cosell must have said this during his Halftime Highlights voice-over recap of Sunday's games on Monday Night Football. (This is an Unidentified Game & Player)
#3. September 5, 1983 Dallas at Washington (Alvin Garrett) "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he" -COSELL
*4. It was NOT this game: Joe Washington ran a last minute 90 yd kickoff return during a rainy game for a touchdown to win the game 34-27 during the September 18, 1978 Monday night game between the Baltimore Colts at New England Patriots, but Howard Cosell never referred to Joe Washington as a "little monkey" in that game.
People have postulated many players including: Art Monk, Gary Clark, Herb Mul-key, and Mercury Morris. I have already eliminated Alvin Garrett (Washington Redskins), Mike Adamle (K.C. Chiefs) and Joe Washington (Giants and Redskins) with my prior documentation of those games and players.
The internet is full of misleading information on this subject. Any help identifying the unknown player or game will be greatly appreciated.
Please contact me if you know more details of the unidentified game (#2) above.
