Virginia Tech in a BCS game?!? |
|
You get housed by 28 by Clemson, you don't deserve a fucking BCS bowl game. Who got screwed there? Boise State, Kansas State, and Baylor. Any of those 3 teams would whip the shit out of Virginia Tech.
Oh, and Oklahoma State got screwed, too. I'm a little bitter about this one; back in 2007, Georgia was at #3 in the BCS and should have moved up into the title game with a West Virginia loss. ESPN put on a full-court press about how Georgia didn't deserve to be in the title game because any team that didn't win its division shouldn't go, and poll voters should vote Georgia down as far as possible in order to prevent it, etc., etc. So we got voted down and had to go play goddamn worthless Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. But this year? No campaign about not winning a division, or begging pollsters to vote Alabama down if Oklahoma State won. Nothing. Just oh well, it's the system. BULLSHIT. Alabama already had their shot against LSU, and should be playing Michigan in the Sugar Bowl.
ESPN is way too powerful in influencing how things go in college football. I've thought they were way too powerful ever since they ran a nonstop campaign for Charles Woodson to win the Heisman over Peyton Manning and it worked.

6. There already is a playoff - #1 vs. #2. |
|
Anything more than that is greedy and unnecessary.

7. Greed is why we have 35 bowl games instead of a playoff. |
|
I can't think of any other sport, college or pro, that doesn't have some sort of a playoff. It's just this one division of college football.

They sell tickets and put the games on TV for a reason.
It's entertainment. Show biz.
Thirty-five bowl games. That's greedy.
The BCS. That's unnecessary.
Why shouldn't the National Champion be decided by a National Tourmnament?
It works in every other sport. Hell, it even works in every other division of football.
(On top of that, I've already seen LSU/Alabama. Spoiler: LSU wins.)

3. "Goddamn worthless Hawai'i" only stunk it up the way they did because |
|
June Jones mailed it in, having already taken the SMU job in his mind. :grr:
That's the same June Jones, by the way, who made UH drop the "Rainbow" from its name -- because he, June, thought it wasn't manly enough.

Hawai'i stunk it up because they sucked ass. Their signature win was against a 4-9 Washington team, and they had to come back to do that. They stunk it up because their OL was so inadequate against Georgia's rush that they couldn't get passes off. June Jones could have been coaching for his life and Hawai'i would have still lost by 28+ because they were not a quality team in any sense of the imagination. The only way Hawai'i would have won that game would have been with about a +8 turnover margin.

Their signature win was against a Boise State team (then a WAC opponent) that had won FIVE league titles in a row, and had just won a BCS bowl the year before. (Not to mention that they beat Georgia earlier this year.)

Boise's last game against Georgia was a 48-13 beatdown at the hands of the Dawgs. Hawai'i was simply a level down, and an undesirable opponent as a football team (although very intriguing with respect to interacting with Hawai'i fans).

9. It's all about the money |
|
Talk about who is deserving or not is beside the point - the bowl system is just a cash cow. It will be the same story every year until they have a playoff and a real championship. Until then it's all about playing the media, hot air and most of all, cashing in.

11. Hell, Michigan doesn't deserve a BCS bowl either. |
|
Both spots should have gone to two of the three teams you mentioned above.
In any case, this year an SEC will finally lose their first BCS championship, in what will probably be another 9-6 snooze fest.
Maybe this is what is necessary to try to get them to revisit the whole BCS/playoff discussion. If the NFL is taking a week off between the Championship and SB, that weekend would be a great time for the finals of a 4 team playoff championship game.
