Poll question: It's been asked before, but: deadlines. Work for you, or not? |

Even though so much of what I've done to undo my writer's block throughout the last year has been about reprogramming my mind so that I understand that deadlines do. not. work. for me, last week, I waited until I was against deadline to begin a short story of mine and--promptly choked hard on it. I feel ridiculous and really, really hope that this is the last time I make this rookie mistake. Yeah, I know the Samuel Johnson quote about nothing inspiring a confession like a hanging in the morning, but--all a hanging in the morning inspires in me is nausea and dread. What about you?

1. I am almost incapable of writing without a deadline |
|
That's a real failing of mine, to be honest. I produce my best work when I'm under the gun, but I'm all but paralyzed when I'm working with an open-ended schedule.

Some of my best writing has been done under pressure. But I still hate them.
