Frau Korner's Banquet in the Twinkling Grotto |
|
The Charcuterie of Gonterser Bock vol 10
The grotto was lit with delicate strings of tiny amber lights, of which I'm very fond. The food was served in bowls of clamshells and hollowed out crab shells. Here and there, green lizards as long as my arm clung to the walls and ceilings. Frau Korner, our lovely hostess, had her long braids wound round with pearls. My favorite dish was the shredded lobster mixed with celery hearts and dressed with a tarragon vinegar. As we were finishing our coffee, the tide decided to come in and flood the floor of Frau Korner's banquet cavern. We amused ourselves by racing boats made out of our dinner plates and sails made from our napkins. Monsieur Breteaux made us laugh as he had rolled his trousers up to the knee and was splashing about, attempting to ferry the dishes of sour cream and caviar to higher ground. Now that's two gowns I've ruined this year!
