Got my first two rejections from agents today |
|
I'm strangely unmoved. Thought I'd be distraught or something.

1. How long did you have to wait? |
|
I've been submitting to contests and open submission publishers. The only agent submission I've tried so far was over a year ago and I got no response.

For the first one. The second one came shortly after that, but I had sent it in last Thursday, so that one was four days.
From what I can tell, response times can vary from five minutes to six months to nothing till you nudge them because they forget. If they're not interested, some agents simply never respond.
I'm trying to figure out what's more difficult to take--a very quick rejection, or one that comes months afterward...

3. The tougher ones for me are the ones I thought I had a good chance with |
|
By that I mean better than average either because of the story or some other connection with the agent or just gut feeling this one would see the story the same way I saw it.
After they start accumulating, you just expect it - de rigeur. It's the ones who actually write something in reply, even if it is a rejection, that you give any notice to at all.

I got No. 3 yesterday and No. 4 this morning, and I was a bit dismayed about No. 4 because in the agent's bio it said she repped my genre EXACTLY, and still she didn't want to read my MS. :(
