How The Dem Party Answers Questions Concerning Abortion |
|
The Democratic party does a pathetic job of discussing the hot button issue of abortion. Why?
In debates, by our elected officials and by regular Dem citizens, we tend to back off and speak in a tone that basically concedes that we are wrong and that abortion is immoral. Why not actually speak our mind? Why not voice the position of choice that we hold? In other words, I am tired of party leaders avoiding discussion of this issue and many other controversial ones. We must take the strong stance that we have and be PROUD to have it. We are not wimps, so let's show it!
Thoughts?

1. This issue should be used to spotlight education... |
|
It has been clearly demonstrated that comprehensive sexual education, access to birth control, and overall level of education decrease the number of unwanted pregnancies.
Period.
The way to decrease unwanted pregnancies is NOT to make safe abortion illegal, but to improve people's overall circumstances.
It would behoove the Democrats to stand on this point.
It also wouldn't hurt to point out that nearly one-fifth of women who obtain abortions are self-described right to lifers.
More people will be harmed by making this proceedure illegal.
I like to tell people who want to abolish the practice that they don't know if someone in their own family might have had the proceedure - but they sure as hell would know if a family member died from an unsafe blackmarket proceedure.

But I'm not in your party. (Assuming you're a Democrat)
That doesn't mean I can't deal with empirical reality and do what's right.

7. I don't think that we talk enough about forced childbirth |
|
Which is the alternative to legal abortion.
But it's probably because the debate then digresses to a "consent to sex = implied consent to pregnancy" which is so subjective.

8. The government should stay out of people's private lives! |
|
I think that is something the majority of Americans will agree to. There are some issues, and I believe that a woman's body is one of those, that the government should make no law regarding an individual's healthcare decisions. Being pregnant incurs healthcare risks and no government should force pregnancy on anyone. The medical community should have guidelines and I'm sure they do because of the oath doctors take to preserve life. Doctors who kill unborn children that could be born alive should lose their licenses. There should be more funding for ultrasound, because few women with healthy fetuses would choose abortion after the ultrasound. Churches would do more for life if they would take in pregnant women who have no means of support until the birth of their children. What good do laws do when they don't change the heart of the problem?

10. Stand up for your convictions and beliefs. |
|
The only way America will not see us as 'baby-killers' is if we make our position clear. That is it. Period. Stand up for what you believe in, Washington.
