South Dakota Boycott web page - info/suggestions needed
I am putting together a page on my website about boycotting South Dakota and could use some help and info. I want to focus on tourism as it is one of the state's main sources of revenue. Basically what I want the page to ask is that people 1) refuse to spend tourism dollars in SD until the ban is repealed, and 2) contact the legislators responsible for this outrage and let them know you'll be boycotting. I'm using some of the info on the "South Dakota - Talk $$$" thread but could really use the following info in a succinct format from someone who's more familiar with this area:

Top 5 list of tourist attractions: Mt. Rushmore, Badlands...???
Top 5 bad legislators to contact and their phone #s and e-mails.

Any other advice/ideas would be great too. Thanks!

1. Include the Sturgis Rally
Sturgis is in/near the Badlands, but the rally is a tourism event all its own. It brings in LOTS of money!

8. better to have bikers with signs and tshirts there
we're bikers and know so many that don't ever miss Sturgis... think a boycott is totally unsrealistic. But can see some making a statement while there.

2. Yes, get whatever
info you can from the Sturgis Rally. It uis huge and draws from all over the place. We see a surprising number of Sturgis t-shirts in the PNW. Once you know who the major Sturgis spenders are, contact them and ask them not to spend their money there. Have people do that from your webpage.

Contact each and every one of these. South Dakota is highly dependent on the credit card industry, beef industry and tourism. South Dakota is small enough that any boycott would have a huge impact on that state.

Also - I will throw this in here:

Have you heard about the amazing day taking place this Thursday, March 9th?

Planned Parenthood Federation of America has named Thursday, March 9th National Solidarity Day with South Dakota. Rallies are being planned across the nation. In Sioux Falls a rally will be held at 12pm noon at the Federal Courthouse. Please take your lunch hour to come and stand up for the women of South Dakota!

I checked out the Sd Rapid City Journal Forum today and there were several Rapid City folks who were in favor of a tourist boycott. There is some interesting stuff in the paper's blog as well.

7. Concert announced for Stugis, SD (Aerosmith on the list)
Aerosmith, Sammy Hagar, Big & Rich, Keith Urban, Steve Miller, Cheap Trick, Steppenwolf, Fabulous Thunderbirds, REO Speedwagon, 38 Special, Foghat, Georgia Satellites, Greg Rollie and Cross Canadian Ragweed are among the acts confirmed for the inaugural Rock`n The Rally music festival, to be held Aug. 6-10 in Sturgis, S.D., Billboard.com has learned.

The festival, to be staged around the giant Sturgis Bike Week that draws thousands to the area, is produced by Dork Fish, Inc.

Dork Fish is in the process of building an $11 million permanent amphitheatre on a 34-acre site at the Glencoe Camp Resort in Sturgis. Capacity will be as high as 60,000. 'As opposed to the `build it and they will come` theory, we subscribe to the `build it where they already are theory`,' Dork Fish production manager/site coordinator Mark Russo tells Billboard.com.

Tickets range from $40 to $70 per day and go on sale on March 10 at Starticketsplus.com.

Ya, these are old bands but I think the record companies should know that there is a boycott of SD in progress.

9. I'm pro-choice but
I don't see why we should boycott companies from S.Dakota, we'll be hurting the people who work for a living. They're the ones who get screwed while the politicians will go on with their evil plan no matter what. I'm not for taking the bread out of workers in this fight or any other fight.

But I'm not helping those who won't help themselves. They get the shaft because they vote for them.

I'm emphasizing boycotting TOURISM, i.e. promotion of the state as a great place and the money that comes from that. It will impact tourism-related businesses, but most importantly it hurts the image of the state. It will also encourage those who live in SD to protest and vote, since their dollars are on the line.

12. I emailed all of the state legislators from South Dakota, one responded w/
I emalied all of the state legislators from South Dakota, one responded and basically said "Why would you boycott SD businesses when the legislature passed the law? The businesses didn't have anything to do with it." I replied and told him that Boycotting the SD State Legislature probably wouldn't do any good, but refusing to send my money there would. He and the others like him would have to explain to their constituents why they stand behind archaic ideology that causes their tourism and and industries to suffer. I told him that I no longer felt welcome in South Dakota, and if I wasn't welcome then I'm not going to send my money there.

If the economic impact is there, the legislators will be forced to repeal the law or be voted out in favor of people who will.

13. Because lots of us want you to
I live in South Dakota and I and many of my friends are hoping that the boycott will be participated in by enough people to have an effect.

Trust me, the state cannot afford it... from unemployment and those types of consequenses to the poor, to retailers complaining, to companies doing manufacturing here feeling pressure....

Dr. Dobson and company have been working overtime to make the few old folks left in the state feel better about being out of touch with change in the world. See this post at: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=178x632

The people who really need the money on the reservations will still get it from the people who will still come for the annual Sun Dance ceremonies. That is where the reservations get any of the benefit from visitors. And those people come and camp out, bring most of their food, but buy some gas and lots of ice on the rez. You won't hurt the reservations.

18. Because SD business taxes SUPPORT the SD Legislature, essentially
the taxes of these gigantic businesses (CitiCorp, etc) provide the funding of these whackjobs way more than the taxpaying citizens.

Look at the demographics of SD - population numbers, tax rates for property owners vs business franchise taxes paid to the State of SD.

Bottom Line Analysis - it is VITAL that you tell these businesses that you are OPPOSED to their funding (via business taxes) of the oppression of women in South Dakota. They are there because of the favorable business climate of that state.

Don't let them turn a profit off the backs of the women in South Dakota.
