1. Louisiana Abortion Ban Moves through Senate Committee
Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 10:33 PM by CatFelyne
Hi-

I'm unable to start new threads-so if someone can get the word out that rights in LA are in serious jeopardy also.

Only allows abortion to save life of mother, no provisions for rape and incest. And there's a Dem here that thinks its not strict enough and even object to sacrificing child's life to save mother.

I'm not from here, I'm from CT and in grad school here, and I fear for the women of this state and of the region. Even for myself, if the unthinkable happened

I've been here through the hurricanes, and this is going to make things even more difficult for those women and families trying to get their lives back together. Imagine losing everything then being forced to have a child

Unfreakingbelievable

2. Senate Approves Strict Ban on Abortion for Louisiana
It just keeps getting better :-( Please someone post this on LBN or GD, as I don't have enough posts.

"In a surprisingly civil debate, the State Senate Wednesday voted 30 to 7 in favor of a strict bill banning abortion. The bill contains an exception to save the life of the mother, but would not allow abortions in the case of a pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.

There were no fireworks, no outbursts, no demonstrations out on the steps, and in just over an hour, the senate had wrapped up debate on one of the nation's most controversial issues.

Senator Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa, authored the bill, it would make abortion illegal in Louisiana if the Supreme Court overturns Roe vs Wade, or if Congress passes a Constitutional amendment that's ratified by the states.

The Senate overwhelmingly approved the bill at the end of the debate, and it heads to the House side next for consideration."
