Anti-abortion event draws crowd to Lincoln
BY RICK RUGGLES
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

LINCOLN — A large gathering made its anti-abortion beliefs known here Saturday through speeches, signs and a slow march.

The sunny, cloudless morning and new President Barack Obama's abortion rights position brought out the crowd for the 35th annual Nebraska Walk for Life, said organizer Julie Schmit-Albin.

Schmit-Albin estimated the turnout at 5,000, while Trooper Drew Ferguson of the Nebraska State Patrol estimated 2,000. "Oh, please," Schmit-Albin said.

Regardless, it was a big crowd. Participants carried signs that read: Huskers for Life; Abortion Has Two Victims: One Dead, One Wounded; Abortion Stops a Beating Heart; and Who Can Deny It Is a Life. They wore T-shirts that contained messages such as Help Cure Abortion and You Can't Be Catholic & Pro-Abortion.

Obama said during the campaign that some small-town Americans get bitter at the loss of jobs and hope and "cling to guns or religion."

"I have to admit that I'm clinging to my religion these days," Schmit-Albin said in her speech to the crowd west of the State Capitol. "Are there any religion-clingers out there today?" Some cheered.

1. About 25 miles from Lincoln is Seward Nebraska which has a
Mo/Syn Lutheran college of approximately 1600 students - I can almost guarantee they were all there.

4. I guess 5000 is considered large
for anti-choice folks. I marched in San Fancisco in 1991 in support of abortion rights, part of 200,000 strong. That was a large crowd.

3. Youre right! As long as the protest
doesnt evolve into forcing their beliefs on me.

5. How can someone force their beliefs on you?
If I hear athiestic music on the radio will I suddenly become one. I suppose the belief could change on when life begins, but thats just a belief either way... personally I have always gone with the theory of "at least do no harm" (which the real hypocratic oath is much more anti-abortion) but thats just me.

6. changing laws and force beliefs on others. "hypocratic"? You are too funny.
Is a Hypocratic Oath one that Rightwing Repubs take?

If you mean the Hippocratic Oath, here it is:

Original, translated into English:<3>
“ I swear by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath.

To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art.

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.

But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.

I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.

In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves.

All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.

If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot.

Often shortened up to "First, do no harm".

Changed portions include "To practice and prescribe to the best of my ability for the good of my patients, and to try to avoid harming them."
"Never to do deliberate harm to anyone for anyone else's interest."
"I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art." The "stones" referred to are kidney stones or bladder stones, removal of which was judged too menial for physicians, and therefore was left for barbers (the forerunners of modern surgeons). Surgery was not recognized as a specialty at that time. This sentence is now interpreted as acknowledging that it is impossible for any single physician to maintain expertise in all areas. It also highlights the different historical origins of the surgeon and the physician.
Those were taken from Wikipedia, too tired to quote other sources they quote.

So, aside from giving a woman a pessary to induce an abortion, nothing there about being anti-abortion
