Abortion Protest Tests New Bellevue Rules (story includes video)

Picketers Drive Through Neighborhood With Graphic Image On Truck

POSTED: 9:23 pm CDT April 22, 2009
UPDATED: 12:40 pm CDT April 23, 2009

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Neighbors are waging a new fight against abortion protesters who won a legal battle for the right to picket in front of a Bellevue home.

"I believe in freedom of speech but what they are doing here is no better than the bully in the high school," said Sherry Hron, the director of nursing at a Bellevue clinic where abortions are performed.

Anti-abortion protestors picketed outside her home on Tuesday and drove through the neighborhood with a truck that had graphic images on its side.

"We had another neighbor who got so tired of it, he laid down in front of (the truck) to stop it," Hron said.

Police said that neighbor, Steve Spurgeon, broke the law by trying to stop the truck. They said the protesters were within their right to protest because they didn't target one person.

"They are bullying this neighborhood," Hron said.

She said she understands the protests outside the clinic where she works, but draws the line in front of her home.

2. It never ceases to amaze me the two faced behavior of some people
When we did the sit ins, we complained about brutal police tactics. Now that we are those being protested we complain about the police tactics not being brutal enough. What is good for the goose is good for the gander...we need to accept the noise they make and not try to silence it, lest we be silenced ourselves on issues that matter to us.

3. Is it that simple?

I can't show pornographic photos on a public street. My definition of porno includes these photos. What is the difference since the locals consider the PHOTOS offensive like I do?

4. I was mostly referring to not protesting away from the office
We did it back in the day, Micheal Moore does it, 60 minutes does it. Now its off limits? Its those claiming that "you can't demonstrate where it upsets people" that bothers me. The images are gruesome, no argument there.

6. Outside of her home? Wouldn't that be considered stalking?
