Barker, New York Clerk Laura Fotusky Quits Over Gay Marriage
http://www.ontopmag.com/article.aspx?id=8915&MediaType=1&Category=26

Laura Fotusky has quit her job as town clerk of Barker, New York rather than sign marriage licenses for gay and lesbian couples, POLITICO.com reported.

New York last month became the sixth – and most populous – state to legalize gay marriage after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a marriage bill approved by lawmakers. The law takes effect on Sunday, July 24, and several cities, including New York City, have announced they'll open on the law's first day.

Fotusky said she quit because of her faith.

“I would be compromising my moral conscience by participating in licensing same-sex couples,” Fotusky said. “I had to choose between my job and my god.”

10. We always say that that is what these people should do.
If you are a vegetarian who has a crisis of conscience over cooking meat, don't work as a chef in a steak house.

Don't work as a pharmacist if you will not dispense birth control.

Don't work as a town clerk if you cannot issue same sex marriage licenses.

She did the right thing. She did it for reasons we find repugnant, but it was the right thing.

13. Given that she's a bigot, her resignation was the honorable course.
Some people would have stayed in office and brought a lawsuit, or simply refused to do their jobs and forced the town to jump through hoops to dismiss them.

I don't agree with her bigotry but the tone of some of the posts in this thread is unnecessarily hostile.

14. I'll take her job.
If she wants to quit that is cool with me. There are a lot of unemployed New Yorkers who will be happy to do the job. It is against my moral conscience to deny gay people marriage licenses.
