US student given 90 days in juvenile detention for attacking gay classmate

A 15-year-old student has been sentenced to a month and half in a juvenile detention centre after he was videotaped attacking a gay classmate, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Levi Sever was filmed beating a gay student, also 15, in a classroom at Unioto High School, Ohio.
He pleaded guilty to assault in a Juvenile Court and was ordered to undergo counselling.
The student’s mother says in an interview with local station WSYX-WTTE, the footage shows the boy trying to get away from his attacker twice before Sever “beats the holy living crap out of him”.

4. If he had attacked a non-gay student he would have gotten 2 years. |

He should not be allowed back at Unito at all and should be expelled from the district but it is unlikely to happen. Let him sit in alternative education for a year.

I taught in alternative ed programs for many years. Many years ago if you were expelled you were either out of your home school or district for two semesters or you didn't go back.

7. I'm shocked he got any time at all, to be honest. |

It seems the attitude when it comes to this in a high school setting is that "boys will be boys."

10. Juvenile justice is typically focused on the youth offender and changing behaviors. |
|
Counseling sounds like a good start. If he were in my county, he would have to comply with those terms or face even more time in jail. Juveniles here can be kept in juvenile custody until 22. I know 45 days in jail seems like a short sentence. But if he goes to counseling and changes his attitudes and beliefs, can't we agree he will come out a better person? Isn't this a better solution than a couple years in jail and releasing a 17yo who still hates people?
