HOUSTON: At first glance, the photographs seem simple.
Images of a Dairy Queen in Bahrain. Three daughters in Yemen holding paper flowers. Snow-capped mountains in the Afghan countryside.
But the photographs are the work of attorneys representing detainees at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, where the U.S. military is holding about 380 men on suspicion of links to al-Qaida or the Taliban. The photos were taken during trips to prisoners' home countries, including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Eighty-eight photographs, which document the trust that grew in some cases between detainees and attorneys, are on display in Houston in a Fotofest exhibit, "Guantanamo. Pictures From Home. Questions of Justice." Some of the photos will be displayed in New York City next month. ~snip~
