New Hampshire gets first death sentence in 49 years

BOSTON (Reuters) - A New Hampshire jury handed
down the state's first death sentence in 49 years
on Thursday, sending a 28-year-old man to death
row for killing a police officer with a single
gunshot to the head.

Michael Addison was found guilty in November of
fatally shooting Michael Briggs, 35, in a
Manchester alley on October 16, 2006. Addison
had been suspected in a series of gun crimes
committed the week before the murder.

New Hampshire's last execution took place 1939,
and its last death sentence was handed down in
1959, although it was later lifted.
