CLEVELAND (AP) — A judge has appointed a Toledo lawyer to investigate whether federal prosecutors gave two newspapers sealed documents in a probe of Cleveland's former mayor.
Also Monday, U.S. Attorney Gregory White's office notified U.S. District Judge James S. Gwin that prosecutors from another, undetermined federal district would investigate whether defense lawyers in the corruption case leaked the documents.
"Our position is that we needed to recuse ourselves to avoid any kind of appearance of impropriety," White said.
Gwin named John Czarnecki, a lawyer who represents defendants in white-collar crime cases, to review whether anyone from the Justice Department leaked the documents. The judge said it appeared that at least three sealed items were given to reporters...
