Suggestions for women's dresses: Mother of the Bride! |
|
(I'm NOT a very fancy person.)
Where should I look? Wedding not until Dec. '11, but daughter newly engaged, so I'm starting to think/plan.
Thanks for your help!

2. Need a lot more information |
|
Formal wedding? Informal?
Indoors?
Time of day?
Color theme, if any?
Once the type of wedding is nailed down, second hand shops are good places to look for inexpensive formal clothes. There's usually a diamond in the trash. If it's to be an informal, your favorite dress with a bit of bling should be fine.

7. Ankle length simple dress with jacket |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-13-10 09:36 AM by sarge43
Depending upon your figure, bolero, waist or hip length (fault the good, hide the bad). If jacket is same material as dress, a bit of jewelry, broach or rope necklace. If a print or contrasting material, simple earrings. Matching or complimentary colored shoes and gloves. If head covering is required, one of those small flirty feather and lace numbers.
Not adventurous I admit, but your daughter is the star. Your job is to compliment and show what a class act she'll be on her 25th wedding anniversary.

8. Have seen a number of these, on line. |
|
Will see how I look, and what Amy thinks. Don't really like ankle length, or longer. Thanks for your thoughts.

9. A long skirt is of course the most formal, but street length would work, too. |
|
The trick with any clothing is good tailoring and quality material.
We want pictures of the great day.

13. Your daughter is the star. That's the key. |

Ask the bride what you should wear.
My daughter wanted me to wear a long gown. So I did. I will probably never wear it again, but it was her day. I helped her make her dress, and she helped me choose mine. It was a great way to share the day. She looked beautiful, and I looked the way she wanted me to. We were both happy.
So, ask your daughter for some advice.
I should add that we exchanged links to websites that featured clothes.

11. There have been some great suggestions on this thread, |
|
and I agree with sarge43. A dress and jacket is a classic. A real keeper.
In addition I think it's important to keep in mind your hair coloring and complexion, so that the dress will complement *you*. All of it will start falling into place once your daughter has finished making her choices about colors and styles for bridesmaids' dresses, etc.
And I understand about not being a fancy type - if I wear anything frilly, I don't look and feel like "myself" and become awkward.
I'm so excited for you, elleng!

12. If you have a Nordstrom nearby, I highly |
|
recommend them. They will work with you and get exactly what looks good on you and what you can afford. I got a lovely dress for my daughter's wedding and wore it again for my oldest daughter's wedding. When my youngest daughter gets married, I'll wear it again. It is timeless and really beautiful.

They are always having sales. My mom got her MOB dress there a few months ago. Good luck and congratulations! Also, check your local paper for coupons.
