An SSI ?, but hoping someone here might know the answer about check deductions |
|
for money earned.
I know you get to keep the first $85 of earnings and then then take half of the remainder earned for the month.
The question is, will they take the entire amount owed out of the next check all at once?
My goddaughter is on SSI and they are still taking deducting from her checks money she earned last winter which she reported each month after she earned it but they failed to deduct anything for 4 months.
She hasn't worked for a couple of months but now she is making some good money for canvassing for our Democratic candidate in the recall election here and we're concerned that SS will deduct for all of those earnings plus her back pay in her September check.
Thanks for any advice or answers.

1. Are you talking about Soc. Sec. Disability or State Disability? |
|
SSI is state, and SSDI is Soc. Sec. Rules are different, so which program you are talking about is important.

3. No, SSI is both federal and state. She gets $674 federal and $83 a month from WI. |
|
She receives SSI (Supplemental Security Income) because of a disability.

4. Under SSI she keeps the first $85 earned in any month, then half of what is left. |
|
Let's say she earned $485 in July which she would report the first week in August. (Her earnings for July might be greater than that since she has been working in the recall election.)
Social Security (which administers SSI) would allow her to keep the first $85, then they would take half of the remainder ($400/2=$200) so they would deduct that amount from an upcoming check.
They are already deducting for money she made last winter and promptly reported, but which they failed to deduct until June ($89 deducted from her $674 check for June and for July). What concerns us is if they would deduct the entire amount she owes for July earnings as well as back pay, leaving her with little more than half a check.

2. I was under the impression that one could earn up to 12,000 |
|
before SSI would be reduced. I do my parents taxes and when my dad was working part time, he didn't earn enough for it to effect his SS. I would call social security and ask them. they've always been really helpful whenever I've had issues.

5. This is not SS, but Supplemental Security Income administered by Social Security. |
|
She cannot have more than $2000 in assets excluding her home or car, and her check might vary each month depending upon whether she is working or how much she earns from working.

7. the usual practice with overpayments on SSi is to deduct |
|
10% of the federal benefit ($67.40) until repaid.

8. That's what I had heard from Catholic Charities if an arrangement is made for 10% to be deducted. |
|
My goddaughter has had $89 taken out of her last 2 checks. Her mother claims the $67.40 only applies to what was previously owed and not to what is currently owed.
I'm convinced that according to what I have been told SS will not take a huge amount out of her check if she makes arrangements for it to be 10%.
I will try to find out today from SS, but Mondays are tough days to try and call there.
