Gay marriage is a threat to the patriarchy at its core. The whole system is predicated on rigid gender roles and keeping men and women in separate and adversarial spheres. We are supposed to be wary and distrustful of each other. Mars and Venus. Yin and Yang. Same-sex marriage throws a big old monkey wrench in that. GLBT people are tangible evidence that the patriarchy doesn't have all the answers and that there is more than one way to live and be, so we can't let them live and be, natch. That may get the straight folks askin' uncomfy questions like why DO I have to look this certain way and buy all this stuff to get laid? Why does putting on a uniform and going to some far off land to kill the people there make me more of a man? Why do I need to work in this mind-numbing job 60 hours a week in order to buy a flat screen TV on credit that blares ads and product placement at me to let me know all the other crap I need to buy and wear and eat in order to be worthy of getting laid? Why can't I just find someone nice and enjoy getting laid?
The last thing they ever want is for men and women to get to know each other as human beings. That would knock the whole house of cards down.
