How many women here can honestly say... |
|
In the interests of getting some statistics, I am re-posting this question in a separate thread. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=229&topic_id=5358&mesg_id=5378How many women here can honestly say they have never in their lives have they said: "That Leonardo/Sean Connery/Roger Moore/... makes me cream my jeans."? Posted by TheMadMonk 1. I have never said "Leonardo/Sean Connery/Roger Moore/...makes me cream my jeans." cheers, 24B

But to answer your question - my sister DOES talk like that, usually ending with a cat's meow.

I think perhaps this person has confused actual persons with parody dialogue written for "National Lampoon" movies.
on edit: Changed my post header so that there is only one instance of that puerile phrase appearing in this thread.

10. I just commented on that there. I have never heard that. |
|
I have hung out in knitting groups that talked on all topics sexual, and I have never, ever heard a woman use that phrase. Men, yes, as I have older brothers, but not women.

who would talk like that.
I think the ways that (many) men IMAGINE (i.e.: want to believe) we talk, and think, are hilarious -- and demonstrate what psychologists call projection to a T.
I think their ideas of what we find sexy or erotic or want sex to be like are NOT hilarious but instead disgusting and depressing. It franky reminds me of my husband: he likes chocolate ice cream. He can never remember I don't, that I prefer vanilla. It just doesn't occur to him my taste not only is but could be different. (To his credit, there aren't many such totally self-absorbed lapses on his part, but that one always gets me because it's so damned perennial.)
And let me go ahead and put a finer point on the matter. The reason I find their foolish notions disgusting and depressing is that they obviusly know so little about us, and don't seem to care about getting it right. Hell, they don't HAVE to. They're the ones on top. Always. It doesn't matter what we want or like. That's only a problem when they're either tying to get laid, or for some of them, trying to get and keep love -- and at these times they're all in a PANIC because they don't understand women. But it's simply not something they do out of caring or concern or altruism or anything but self-interest. Ever.
And yeah, I'm talking about most men. 99.9% of all men, in all probability.

Hubby does his best to figure out what I like, even after nine plus years of marriage. He doesn't always get it right, but those are usually times when I haven't told him.
He's a rare guy, though. None of the guys I dated in college or were friends with were as concerned. It was our job as the women to know what they liked, but they didn't have to concern themselves with it. Granted, we went to an evangelical college (hard to be a feminist there, btw), but still, I think there are many like them.
I think it's not so much projection as an inability to hear the difference in language and to think that women use language very differently. I remember in my linguistics class when our prof said that women and men use English so differently as to almost make it two different languages. The male students disagreed and were quite suprised when all of the female students were so vociferous in our agreement. It had never occured to them that we speak differently. They'd never had to worry about it.

I think you missed this: (To his credit, there aren't many such totally self-absorbed lapses on his part, but that one always gets me because it's so damned perennial.)
It really is, for some strange reason, the only thing I'm aware of where he does this.
I wouldn't have married someone who was a sexist, Nosirree -- not the 2nd time around. Nuh-uh.
Interesting remarks about language, and again: they don't HAVE to. Infuriating, isn't it?

14. O.K. so I dredged up a bit of schoolgirl slang. |
|
It might have been: "Nice buns"; "He's hot"; and so on.
The point is that a good many women are perfectly capable of expressing their sexual interest just as crudely as men. Not all do, but nor do all men. Generally I content myself with a wishful "Niice" or "Yum". Does that make me a slavering beast?

21. Can you hear the difference in the terms used, though? |
|
Women don't tend to use visceral terms, words that are frankly physical in their meaning. It's just not how many of us think. Can you see the reactions of how it's gross, it's rude, it's disgusting? Those aren't because anyone's lying or hiding who they really are--they're the first, gut reactions of these people. Most people tend to post quickly and think about it later, much like regular conversation. It really comes down to how the majority of women tend to view men and sex in general, and that's very different than how men tend to.

22. That summed up my reaction remarkably well |
|
Not just "I don't use that phrase" but an actual "ewww gross who talks like that/thinks like that?" response.
The funny thing here is that I'm reading this and the other thread, and at the same time I'm reading a series of emails from a good friend who is weaving in and out around public radio, the arts, and a guy she likes. This is what she writes: "he is a breath of fresh air - centering - calming."
Such a world of difference between not just the words chosen, but also the perception of what's important about the person being described.

27. I don't have sex organs attached to my eyes |

so I've never been particularly affected by the sight of beefcake photographs. In fact, I think most of them look downright silly.
My favorite actors tend to be the character actors who play a wide variety of parts and personalities. If they do it with wit and artistry, I admire their work. But attracted to them? Nah.
I would also never use that particular expression, since that is something I am anatomically incapable of.
Perhaps rephrasing the question might be something to consider.

33. me. I've never said or thought that |
|
none of them do anything for me.
as an aside: I did some temp work back in August of 2001 directing a spot for AMFAR's annual telethon. The people I worked with were Leonardo di Caprio and Giselle Bunchen. Both very nice and gracious people, quite professional. At one point, di Caprio's hair was sticking out in a weird direction and it needed to be smoothed down... so I walked up to him and smoothed down his hair. AT that very point in time, I thought to myself "how many millions of girls, right now, would love to own my right hand?" Girls would kill to be where I was standing (this was after the huge Titanic blow out at the Oscars and box office).
As I said: nice guy, but he does nothing for me. I can honestly say the only man that gets that reaction out of me is the one I'm with. Seriously. It's like that.
